The latest meetings over the proposed Beachville landfill took place Wednesday. It wasn't just the company proposing to open the massive landfill however. Oxford People Against the Landfill also wanted to have their say. Karen Paton-Evans with OPAL says they've created a check list of community concerns. "It's quite a lengthy list that we've compiled after hearing thousands of residents tell their concerns over all these months. So they can check things off and take it over to Walker. It's there in a nut shell, the issues that we're worried about: air, water quality, quality of life, at risk wildlife species and so on," said Paton-Evans. But Walker Industries insists they've took these concerns into consideration. After gathering input since their last open house, Walker has created an Environmental Assessment. Issues have been put into four different categories: - public health and safety - natural environment and resources - social cultural issues - economics Each one of the issues are put into one of these categories and are then assign those to one or more consultants to study and evaluate. They've also toured the immediate area. General Manager Joe Ling says they have a community liaison committee made up of people from around the site that gave them the tour just last week. "We were able to stop at different points and they could identify to us what was valuable to them in the community. That enabled our consultants to see the proposal through the community's eyes a little bit, at least to get a peek. It lets us understand what the community values are and makes sure we'll develop the studies that protects those things," said Lyng. There was also a 3-D display of the dump liner (in bottom photo) at the open house. It's about twelve feet deep and is expected to hold seepage for 1,000 years.
