Local kids are joining a hockey league that's free to play in.
TILLSONBURG - A local hockey program is giving back to the community.
The Tillsonburg Kinsmen Club partnered with the Club Oxford Hockey League to create Hockey 4 Everyone, a program allowing children who can't afford to play or who aren't currently in a league.
Hockey 4 Everyone instructor Dan Dube says the program has been funded from a variety of local businesses and organizations, including the Club Oxford Hockey League, which makes it free to join.
"Everything is completely free. Three months of free on-ice instructions, two hours a week and it works."
Dube originally started Hockey 4 Everyone as an early morning hockey program for students up to Grade 6, while working as a teacher at Rolph Street Public School ten years ago. After meeting Oxford Hockey League president Kim Alexander through a mutual friend in hockey, they collaborated and decided to give that same opportunity to other children in the community.
Since the program began, Dube says the kids are having a lot of fun.
"We have had no complaints at all. Students are always smiling, happy to be out there every morning, enjoying the game and having a great time."
The program is available for children from Grade 2 to 8 and there are still spots available. Parents can head to the Tillsonburg Community Centre to sign a permission form at the front desk and provide contact information.
Equipment fitting will be held on December 28th from 7-9 p.m and December 29th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. inside the Marwood Lounge at the Tillsonburg Community Centre.
Hockey 4 Everyone starts on January 10th at the Kinsmen Memorial Arena.
