Milestone Year for Gord Marshall Fastball Tourney

It's a special year for one of the top tournaments in women's fastball. This is not only the 10th year for the Gord Marshall Memorial tournament in Innerkip, it's also the year when the fundraiser will surpass $100,000 raised. That's the total amount of money raised by the tournament, in memory of the late Gord Marshall, who lost his life to cancer in 2003. The money goes to the Oxford Canadian Cancer Society. Aside from the cause of the tournament, one of the organizers, Kyle Smith says it's also some of the best women's fastball to be found. "Teams circle our date. They know the competition is going to be stiff, it's a good gauge of where you are in the season and how you have to improve for Canadian Championships, or Eastern Canadians or whatever it is. But we are the premiere tournament on the women's circuit...everybody is knocking at our door." The action gets underway tonight in Innerkip at 6:30 with Tier 2 action. There are 12 teams in the lower tier, which features more local and regional teams. Tier 1 play will open on Friday night, with a headliner to start: the Whitby Eagles, the current Canadian Senior Champions, against the Chepstow Diamonds, the current Intermediate Champions. That game goes at 8PM, which will be followed by opening ceremonies and a special display to mark the milestone year for the tournament. Smith says, "We want to go out with a bang. We've been lucky to secure a great sponsor, Laidlaw Carriers has come on board and they're going to help us put on one of the best fireworks displays that you're going to see around the countryside this year." The tournament culminates on Sunday afternoon with the Tier 2 final at 1PM. There will be a closing ceremony and cheque presentation to the Cancer Society between that game, and the Tier 1 final at 3PM. Keep tuned to Heart FM for scores and updates from the tournament all weekend long.
