It's a loss for the community, and a loss for Operation Sharing. Their President, Frank Smith, passed away over the weekend, after suffering with bone cancer for a number of months. He was 81-years-old, and spent his final hours surrounded by family and friends at Sakura House. Chair Person of Spiritual Life Committee, Glen Wright, worked with Smith for 20-years in Operation Sharing. He tells Heart FM that Frank truly lived his work with the organization. "Marion, his wife used to say, 'If I don't know where Frank is, he'll be at The Meeting Place, or the soup kitchen.' You would drop in at The Meeting Place, and there Frank would be. He was not one to serve from afar." Wright says even at his last Operation Sharing meeting on February 12th, Smith conducted the meeting despite the fact that he was clearly ailing. "At the end of the meeting, he was in a lot of pain, he probably shouldn't have been there. But I asked him how he was and he said 'I'm feeling the pain tonight'. Within a day or so of that meeting, he went into hospital, which indicates just how dedicated he was to the organization." In fact, when Frank was in the hospital over the last month, he was determined to get out so he could catch up on his work with Operation Sharing. A memorial service for Smith will be held on May 11th, at 3:30. Click here to visit the on-line obituary for more on the life of Frank Smith.
