It remains a waiting game as the OPAL alliance continues the battle to keep a private dump from moving into Oxford County.
WOODSTOCK - The Oxford People Against Landfills or OPAL Alliance was at Oxford County council this morning to provide an update on their ongoing battle to stop a private landfill from coming into the County.
Right now they don't have much of an update, other than they are still waiting to hear from the Ministry of Environment and the group will continue to make their voices heard. OPAL chair Bryan Smith tells Heart FM the group did find out something interesting while doing a little research on the so called sustainability plans in the GTA.
"Large communities like Peel and York and Toronto itself, there sustainability plan is based on the notion that they can sustain themselves by shipping their waste somewhere else and in a couple of cases there is a direct reference to the dump in Oxford County."
Smith notes the part about shipping trash to Oxford was buried in the fine print. He adds right now they are still waiting for things to develop which is not necessarily a bad thing.
"At this point waiting is not necessarily a bad thing, although it's a painful thing to do but it's not necessarily bad because the Province has this Waste Free Ontario Act that has gone through first reading, if it goes through second and third reading and it says we will stop burying things in the ground like we used to do, that we can come up to date with modern solutions and technologies, then that's a good thing."
Smith also points out they will continue to fight the Province on this and is thrilled with the support OPAL has from the community.
"Well the number of letters that have been produced by people in Oxford County and adjoining areas as well is astounding, it's over 46,000 the last time I counted and it has probably gone higher now and that is only the ones that have come through us as OPAL and partner groups."
