The damage is estimated at about $5-million following a fire at the Walker Dairy Farm in Aylmer.
MALAHIDE - About 100 cows have died following a barn fire just outside Aylmer.
Essex OPP say the fire broke out at the Walker Dairy Farm on Talbot Line just before 5:00 p.m. last night.
None of the farm workers were inside the building at the time. A truck driver reported the blaze after they arrived to pick up a load of cattle.
About 300 cows managed to escape to an outside pen and about 70 were trapped inside the milking parlour. Police say an unknown number of cattle suffered smoke inhalation and a veterinarian attended the scene to treat them or put them down if necessary.
Officials believe the fire started in the bulk milk storage barn but the cause has not been determined yet.
The damage is estimated at about $5-million and the investigation is ongoing.
