Operation Safe Start Hitting Oxford County

The start of another school year is right around the corner, and police want to make sure everyone is safe.

OXFORD COUNTY - The Oxford OPP will be involved in Operation Safe Start.

This traffic initiative will be throughout the entire county during the first two weeks of school. It is during this time that an increase in volume happens around schools, along school bus routes, as well as during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. Police say this increases the risk of collisions, speeding, distracted driving, pedestrian conflicts, and violations involving stopped school buses.

Operation Safe Start will focus on making sure drivers are conducting the correct behaviour around school zones and school bus safety laws. Oxford OPP Detachment Commander, Inspector Tony Hymers, talks about the importance of this initiative.

"Student safety remains a high priority in our communities. This initiative aims to promote compliance with school zone regulations and school bus safety laws while enhancing the safety of all students travelling to and from school. Motorists remaining patient and alert when driving among school buses and school zones can help everyone have a "safe start" to the school year."

Officers will always try to educate, but if needed, will enforce penalties.
