INGERSOLL - Oxford OPP are reminding everyone to always obey crossing guards after a close call in Ingersoll.

Police say a couple of vehicles blew past the crossing guards on Wonham Street on Tuesday morning just after 9. Through the course of the investigation, it was reported that a green coloured Hyundai drove through the intersection before the crossing guard could get all pedestrian across the street.

There are trained crossing guards located in a number of locations throughout Oxford County. Their role is to direct and supervise the movement of persons across a highway by creating necessary gaps in vehicular traffic allowing pedestrians and especially children to cross roads safely.

The Highway Traffic Act states that, when a school crossing sign is displayed, the driver of any vehicle approaching the stop sign shall stop before reaching the crossing and shall remain stopped until all persons, including the school crossing guard have cleared the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is travelling and it is safe to proceed. Failure to obey the crossing guard could result in a charge of failing to obey a school crossing stop sign, a penalty of about $180 and an accumulation of 3 demerit points.

Constable Ed Sanchuk says it's lucky that nobody was injured in this case.

"Remember, when a crossing guard signals for you to stop, you must obey. There might still be a child crossing the street that you cannot see. Crossing guards are there to protect our children from harm and to get them safely across the street."
