Politicians Push Importance of Auto Industries

Oxford County Politicians are standing up for the auto industry when it comes to NAFTA.

WOODSTOCK - The City of Woodstock is keeping a close eye on the potential for North American Trade Agreement re-negotiations.

Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch says all of the Auto Mayors are passing resolutions at local councils and forwarding letters to advise the Prime Minister on the importance of the auto sector. Birth Tells Heart FM he thinks the Canadian component of NAFTA is fair to the United States.

"Well one of the things that we have discussed is the importance was really about the Southern border and Mexico and the imbalance of trade there. Looking at the Canadian component for America, we see that the number of automobiles made here in Canada represents about the number of automobiles that are sold in Canada. So although some cross the border for different models, we have factories in the United States that are building models that come here to Canada as well, so it is a balanced approach and we offer a high level of quality that should not be overlooked as well."

He says in Oxford County we have industries in Tillsonburg, Ingersoll, and Woodstock that are all affected and we will have resolutions from 2 towns, the City, and likely Oxford County as well and our MP already belongs to the Auto Caucus.

"We are forwarding letters to Prime Minister Trudeau to advise his committee that will be doing the NAFTA negotiations about the importance of the auto sector, both ways across the border and dating back even before NAFTA back to the AUTOPAC."
