Prepared for the Cold?

OPP hope residents have their cars stocked with emergency supplies during extreme cold.

With temperatures dangerously cold today, now more than ever, motorists need to ensure they have emergency supplies in their vehicles.

Items like blankets, a first aid kit, a flashlight and jumper cables could be a lifesaver in this type of weather.

Oxford OPP Constable Lisa Narancsik hopes most people have these items handy if they become stranded.  "I would hope they would.  I know we're constantly telling people to be prepared.  But I think that people don't always transition their vehicle from summer driving to winter driving and some of their boxes have been left in their garages."

A fully charged cell phone and full tank of gas can also help get you out of trouble if you become stranded in the cold.

Here's a list of winter travel safety tips from OPP:

-Keep an eye on the weather and if travel is not required, stay home
-Ensure your vehicle is winter ready and has received regular maintenance
-Plan your trip and check weather conditions
-Notify a family member or friend of your destination and potential arrival time
-SLOW DOWN-Take your time and create distance between vehicles
-DO NOT PASS winter maintenance vehicle
-If you are not comfortable driving, don’t drive
-Extra windshield fluid and at least half a tank of gas
-Have an Emergency Kit –battery jumper cables, first aid kit, shovel, multi-tool, blanket, extra clothing, high calorie non-perishable food supply, flashlight, ice-snow scraper, cell phone
