The roughly 25 miles of rail line can be accessed by four major regional employers, representing over 400 jobs.
TILLSONBURG - Rail service from St. Thomas to Tillsonburg will be reinstated through Phase One of the Future of Shortline Rail Initiative.
GIO Rail, the Town of Tillsonburg and SCOR EDC made the announcement on Friday. This is being done in partnership with CN rail. Several business from Elgin to Norfolk will be able to access the roughly 25 miles of rail line. The goal of this service is to support these businesses and help them to retain the roughly 400 jobs in the area.
The ball got rolling with this initiative in November 2020, when GIO Rail, the Town of Tillsonburg and SCOREDC sent a letter of intent to develop a business case for re-instating operations along the Cayuga Rail sub-division.
SCOR EDC is now looking to Transport Canada's National Trade Corridor to help secure funding for infrastructure improvements along the track.
Mayor of Tillsonburg and Chair of SCOR EDC Stephen Molnar says this is good news for the region.
" The manufacturing and agricultural businesses along this line of track are very important to the Town and surrounding region. Right now, we are in the business development stages; that means analyzing the economic impact of the rail on businesses, the businesses in the region, and the costs associated with business development. We are exploring every option for support from the levels of government as well."
Within Elgin, Norfolk and Oxford Counties, there is over 1,000 acres of industrial zoned property along the rail line. This includes 4 major regional employers, representing over 400 jobs.
