Students Fundraising for the Trip of a Lifetime

There will be a silent auction and family movie night at Huron Park Secondary School tonight, raising money for a group of students to travel to Europe in June.

WOODSTOCK - It will be the trip of a lifetime for a group of students from Huron Park Secondary School.

Thirty-two students will fly to Europe for nine days in early June. Teacher Rob Dowsett, who is organizing the trip, says they will commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

"So we're going to be there on June 6th at Juno Beach commemorating the Canadians who fought and landed on the beach there. There will also be other commemoration activities surrounding it on the trip, we'll be going to Vimy Ridge and we'll be going to the Anne Frank House. So we will be doing a bunch of different types of commemoration."

Dowsett has organized this trip for a few years now, and he says it's a life-changing experience for these students.

"We go to several cemeteries to commemorate the soldiers. I remember on one of the trips, we had a couple of Grade 10 boys, who when they really started to realize the scope and magnitude of the loss, they started crying. You don't see that from Grade 10 boys very often."

The students will be holding a silent auction and family movie night in the Huron Park cafeteria from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. this evening to raise money for the trip. There will be more than 70 items on the auction table and the movie will be the animated film Rio.

They're hoping to raise $10,000 for the trip, which will go towards their transportation to and from Toronto Pearson Airport.

Rob Dowsett stopped by the Heart FM studio with two of his students, Rachel and Raelynn, to chat with Dan and Marcie. You can listen to the full interview below:
