A tentative date has been set for a local second-degree murder trial. Melissa Garland is charged with second-degree murder in the death of five-and-half-month-old Brookelyn Hopkins. She was originally charged with failing to provide the necessities of life and criminal negligence causing the death of the infant while she was babysitting her. But soon after the Crown received a completed pathology and coroner report she was charged with second-degree murder. Her trial could be 2-3 week long, beginning on November 12th. That length depends on an application for a judge-only trial filed by Defence Counsel Rhonda Fawcett. The trial date could be confirmed on March 14 at a bail variation hearing.
