Woodstock Police are ready for Halloween and they want to make sure the public is too.
WOODSTOCK -- Many kids are eagerly waiting for Halloween night while the Woodstock Police say they are well prepared.
Chief Rod Freeman says they will have extra patrol in the city Friday night to ensure it is a safe Halloween for all.
Freeman points out that motorists need to be on high alert and keep their eyes on the road. "It's a pretty exciting time for the kids and they're trying to grab as much candy as they possibly can in a short period of time and they're not as careful about their own safety as they could be or should be so I think it's incumbent upon motorists to be extra vigilant that night in particular to watch for those kids that are darting across the roadway, unexpectedly and to ensure that they keep the speeds down and just make sure everybody has a safe and enjoyable night."
For the trick-or-treaters heading out, try to avoid longer costumes that could be a tripping hazard and make sure the kids have a reflective candy bag or reflector on their clothing. "Consider using face paints or hats instead of masks because a mask can some times obstruct the kids view and they won't see a car coming or see something that might pose a danger to them. We're also encouraging the kids to carry a flashlight or one of those glow sticks. And we're asking the homeowners around town to keep their homes lit up so that the kids are well protected, can be seen and also by lighting up the neighbourhoods it will deter vandalism too."
Officers will be on patrol throughout the city Friday night, as Freeman highlights, "ready, willing and able to come to the assistance of any homeowner or property owner that's run into any difficulty at all." Anyone who notices or witnesses suspicious activity within city limits should call WPS immediately at 519-537-2323.
