Woodstock Officially a Safe Community

Woodstock has officially been designated as a Safe Community. The city's Mayor and Chief of Police signed the documents Tuesday (in photo), marking the 62nd safe community in Canada. Founder of Safe Communities Canada Paul Kells says the city will focus on three priories. "Woodstock has three things that they want to get at. The falls, I know they're concentrating on the skatepark, trying to ensure helmet use so sports and recreation safety. Then they're also dealing with road safety. There's a whole host of things that can be done in small specific ways one step at a time. You'll find over the years there will be fewer people injured, fewer people dying because of what's gone on," said Kells. Chief of Woodstock Police Rod Freeman says the future looks safer. "We look to the forward with optimism. We've received a great deal of support from a number of different service agencies within Woodstock. Our own officers, firefighters, and staff see this as a wonderful thing and I think every single parent should be pleased because who doesn't want to live in a safe community," said Freeman. He says they've received a positive response from a wide variety of local sectors. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada alone donated the $25,000 that was needed to run the program for the first two years.
