More 9-1-1 Headaches in Norfolk County

A 24 year old woman called 9-1-1 four times last week by accident.

NORFOLK COUNTY - Norfolk OPP are once again reminding the public to only call 911 for emergencies.

The most recent issue happened last week where a 24 year old woman called 911 four times, and hung up immediately every single time. Police eventually tracked down the woman after the fourth call. She told police that she had purchased a new phone and was having some issues.

Over the past month the Norfolk OPP have had 911 calls from an adult who was upset when their mom told them they were playing too many video games, a child who was upset he had to clean his room and other miscellaneous reasons.

What you can do to prevent misdials:

- Make sure you know the number you are dialing

- Lock your cell phone number pad

- Teach your children the proper use of 911

- If you dial 911 by mistake, do not hang up. Stay on the phone so the dispatcher can ascertain your safety and let them know it was a mistake.

Constable Ed Sanchuk says you are using up valuable resources when you call 911 for non emergency reasons.

"Whether false alarms are intentional or unintentional, they tie up the phone lines at the communications centre, waste taxpayer money, tie up law enforcement officers and threaten lives."

If someone has a non urgent need for police but would still like to speak with or see an officer, they should dial the toll free number of 1-888-310-1122. This number will connect them to the OPP call taking centre dispatcher who in turn will direct the call to a detachment member who is on duty.
