Volunteers collected over 35,000 pounds of food on May 6th.
OXFORD COUNTY - It was a successful 15th annual Realtors Care Food Drive hosted by the Woodstock Ingersoll Tillsonburg & Area Association of REALTORS (WITAAR).
More than 127 Realtor volunteers, along with family and friends, took to the streets of Oxford County to gather over 35,000 pounds of food. The food supports local organizations including, Helping Hands in Tillsonburg, Salvation Army in Ingersoll, Operation Sharing in Woodstock, and Seniors in Food Crisis also in Woodstock. Leading the way was Operation Sharing with 18,000 pounds, next was the Salvation Army in Ingersoll at 10,000 pounds, then Seniors in Food Crisis was given 4,000 pounds, and lastly, Helping Hands Food Bank in Tillsonburg had 3,500 pounds donated to them.
WITAAR President Derrek de Jonge gives his thoughts about how important and beneficial the event is.
"I am incredibly proud of our members and the commitment they continue to show to this initiative. This annual food drive is a meaningful way for our REALTORS® to give back and show that we are more than real estate professionals; we are neighbours who care deeply about the communities we serve. I’d also like to extend my sincere thanks to the REALTORS® Care Committee for their hard work in organizing another outstanding event."
Based on the valuation criteria from Food Banks Canada, the total monetary value of the food is $124,960. The donations will be more than a one day fix, they are expected to keep the shelves at each organization stocked through the summer, which is a time where a lot of food banks are in need of more products.
Since the food drive started, there has been an estimated 367,803 pounds of food raised for the local food banks, which is an extraordinary achievement and is made possible by the generosity of the community and volunteers.
