It was a gold medal finish for the Oxford Attack U16 boys at FIBA sanctioned tournament in Hamilton.
HAMILTON - The Oxford Attack Under-16 Major Midget Boys team won gold in Division 2 at the Blessed Sacrament sanctioned Ontario Basketball Association tournament in Hamilton.
The Attack won a tight, thrilling finals rematch against their pool opponent, the Cornwall Lions, 59-50. The Attack seized control of tight game in the 4th quarter and held on to win their 3rd sanctioned tournament of the season. The Attack opened pool play against the Cornwall Lions and sank 11 3-point shots from the long distance FIBA 3-point line to easily down the Lions 62-43. The boys next faced the North Toronto Huskies and used a balanced scoring attack to secure a comfortable 59-33 victory.
The Attack boys next played a tough Burlington Force squad whom they had defeated earlier in the season in two close games. The Attack fell behind early but battled back with strong defence and timely shooting to nip the Force for the 3rd time 55-46. The boys had clinched first place in their pool with a 3-0 record before they completed pool play against the KW Vipers. The Attack squandered a 15 point lead in the first half to narrowly lose 62-60 on a last minute 3-point shot. Complacency and poor second half defence contributed to the Attack setback.
Next up for the Oxford Attack U-16 boys is an exhibition tournament in London next weekend followed by their provincial championships in Ottawa later in May. The Attack U-16 boys will compete in Division 4 out of 9 total divisions within the provincial championships. They will be ranked in the top 30 out of over 70 U-16 boys’ teams in the entire province.
