Dragon Boat Races at Pittock

Medals as well as bragging rights are on the line for those ready to compete in Woodstock's Dragon Boat Festival

WOODSTOCK - Medals as well as bragging rights are on the line for those ready to compete in Woodstock's Dragon Boat Festival.  Pittock Lake will be filled with teams on August 8th that will make the festival the most successful to date.  Festival Chair and Rotarian Dave Harris talks about where the money raised will be going.  "It's a two prong event for us it is a bit of a community service, and it is also one of our major fundraiser's for the year.  We typically raise $20,000 a year with the event, money is used both locally and nationally.  I would just like to let the Woodstock community know that it is going to be a great day, you can watch the race from both sides of the lake."

Harris explains how well attended the races are set to be.  "We have a full day of racing, it will be our most successful festival yet with 52 teams registered to race.  Racing will be starting half an hour earlier than normal at 8:30 in the morning and be going right through until 4:30 in the afternoon."  The over $20,000 expected to be raised by this event will impact local and international initiatives from school bursaries to earthquake relief in Nepal.

With the Dragon Boat Festival just over a week away the intensity is building and Harris breaks down how everything is planned to unfold.  "We all run typically a 3 race day, and then we run a really exciting 2000m at the end of the day.  They will paddle head to head essentially around the course twice and that is a pretty exciting race, every division has an opportunity to win a gold or silver medal.  The participants always come back with great comments about the fun they had and the venue also is excellent."  As the Rotary Club continues to prepare the most successful festival yet they are pleased to announce registration is full.
