Educate Yourself During Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness Week

Oxford County Public Health is encouraging everyone to take a close look at their sexual and reproductive health this week.

The week leading up to Valentine's Day in Canada is known as Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness Week.

Program Supervisor in Health Protection with Oxford County Public Health Joanne Andrews says it's a good time to educate yourself on sexual health.

"So we would like people to educate themselves about their physical, sexual, and reproductive health, so that would mean learning about how to protect yourself from sexually transmitted infections, or learn about when and how to get tested, or learn how to plan for or prevent a pregnancy, but also to learn more about your relationship, like to how to communicate with your partner and how to create a healthy consent based culture. You may be aware that there has been some changes to the curriculum that is being used in Ontario and one of the things that is being focused on is consent. So that means what is consent? What does that look like? And what is really important, which is how do I talk about consent."

If you want to get tested you can also sign up for an Oxford County sexual health clinic which are held in Woodstock and Tillsonburg. Andrews says the Health Unit has a lot of great information posted on their web site oxfordcounty.ca.
