2015 marks the 150th anniversary of the Fire Department in Woodstock
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Museum is celebrating Woodstock's Fire Fighters.
Curator of the Woodstock Museum Karen Houston says the 'Defined under Pressure Exhibit' is something truly special. "We're actually celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Fire Department here in Woodstock that was actually organized by the City. They had fire brigades before that but 150 years ago they were actually paid by the city and they actually put an extension on City Hall to hold the horses and the horse wagons that would go out for the fires."
Houston says this is a great opportunity to catch a glimpse into the past. "Well first off we have some fabulous photos from very very early on when there were just fire brigades in Woodstock. But also you'll see everything from old jaws of life to some of the toys from in the 1950s that the fire department and the firefighters would actually give out to the children at Christmas and at special events."
They even have something special in the works for StreetFest. "If you come on August the 9th we will actually have vintage fire trucks around museum square that day. So that's the StreetFest Cruise," Houston says. "And we'll also have the exhibit open, and we'll have Elaine Becker who is a wonderful researcher from the Oxford Historical Society, and she will be here to talk about her book she had written about the fire department and the exhibit."
Doctor Elaine Becker's book is also called called 'Defined Under Pressure'
The exhibit is currently running and goes until September.
