The Hickson Tigers are sporting some new bronze bling after their trip to Fredericton
WEB - The Hickson Tigers picked up a bronze medal at the Canadian U18 Fastball Championships in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
After going 5-4 in the round robin last week the team started the playoffs in fourth place and lost a heartbreaker 10-5 to Campbellford with a spot in the finals on the line. Hickson won three times in the playoff round which was good enough for third place and a bronze medal. Head Coach Dave McLaren tells Heart FM the boys had a great time on the East Coast and everybody really brought their A game.
"You could almost go right through the whole lineup really; everybody had their games where they played really well. It just seemed like when the top of the order was hitting and scoring runs one game, then the next game it was the bottom of the order hitting and scoring runs, so it was just one of those things where everybody came to play and we had a great time."
McLaren says it was a great experience for everyone on the team getting to play at the week long tournament.
"We had some kids like Chris Matts who plays for the Woodstock Navy Vets who said you know the only thing that would really relate to this is the OHL cup in hockey that he was at, but he said this is a different stage and he really had a great time. Even the kids who didn't get to play a whole lot, they said hey this has been a heck of an experience and we got to work hard to try and get better and come back here another year."
The team is made up of players from across Oxford with players from Woodstock, Embro, Tavistock, Innerkip and of course Hickson.
