Ice Water Training

The Woodstock Fire Department are taking part in some ice water training rescue this week.

WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Firefighters are doing ice water rescue training this week.

The two new recruits and the instructors are taking part in the week long course. Deputy Fire Chief Jason Whitely tells Heart FM what they are doing in the training.

"We started out with classroom training on Monday and now we are into the practical training and what we will be doing is different types of rescue manoeuvres using different types of equipment from what we would call a go rescue where a firefighter will go into the water and physically remove a victim from the water, this is all kind of a team approach and we have a number of different scenario's to train for."

Whitley says luckily they haven't had to use the training recently, however they are always prepared because they are the only department in the County that provide the ice water rescue service.

"But we are always prepared because one of the different services we provide is of course the ice rescue and we also provide water rescue or open water rescue in the summer, but in the County we are the only department that provides this service so we also provide it outside the County and as you know we have a number of ponds in the City."
