It was an Oxford showdown in the championship game a the U14 Fastball Nationals in Saskatchewan.
INNERKIP The Innerkip Eagles are the best U14 fastball team in the country.
They won a National Championship in Saskatchewan on Saturday in extra innings 8-7. Teams from across Canada competed in the tournament, but it was a team from Tavistock that they played in the finals. Head Coach of the Eagles Peter Van Boekel tells Heart FM they had to rally in the bottom of the extra inning after a kid was called out at third base.
"It was a crazy inning because we had the emotional high of getting a runner on third with nobody out and then a crazy out because he was jumping up and down because he was so excited and was tagged out in mid air but then we just went to the kids and said let's just rebuild it, let's do it again, we started with a hit and then we got a double and then we got an out and then Ewing came up and got a hit to give us the 8-7 win and everything's done and it felt great."
Van Boekel says they hadn't beaten Tavistock in 5 years before this tournament and they actually beat their rival twice en route to a gold medal. He notes they were confident in their pitching and defence coming into the tournament and really worked on their hitting.
"We worked really hard on our batting, we knew that was our weakness, we had Howie Brown help us out and working hard on batting again and again because we knew that was our weakness and you at the end of the day we win an 8-7 ball game in extra innings and I can't help but think that batting was probably the reason right."
