The poppy should be worn over your heart to remember those who currently are and those that have served our country
OXFORD COUNTY - It is time to proudly display the poppy as we take a special moment to remember all who are or who have served.
Colour Sergeant for the Branch 55 Legion Mike Pritchard says some people struggle to keep the poppy on, so the Legion has come out with little plastic tips to help keep in in place. "Now a lot of people wear a Canadian flag inside the centre of it to to hold it in place. It's not really something that should be defacing the poppy."
Pritchard also mentions that although they prefer to see poppies worn over the heart, they understand that's not also possible for everyone. "People that have it on their hats, sometimes its because of their job, some military - we used to wear it on the winter caps on the left hand side of the cap itself. It's better to have it displayed than not wear one at all."
At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you make sure to wear a poppy this week at all. "Now the poppy should be worn during that week of remembrance and it should be taken off immediately after the 11th," says Pritchard. "There are certain circumstances when legion personnel will wear it and that's with colour parties in regards to certain ceremonies as well and that would take place any time after the remembrance period is over with."
