Lock it or Lose it

Police found over 100 unlocked vehicles when patrolling a parking lot in Woodstock

WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police are preaching lock it or lose to protect yourself from vehicle entries and theft.

Police did a recent check of a busy parking lot in the Friendly City and found over 100 cars had left their doors unlocked. Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen says a lot of times the thieves are looking for an easy mark to support an addiction.

"If we do are part to keep our property safe it will actually prevent people from going into our vehicles, so basically they are looking for loose change or certain electronics to pawn or sell on the street just to get that quick cash, so it is a crime of opportunity. If a person is going down the street checking every vehicle, they are going to take from the ones that are unlocked."

VanLeeuwen says it is also important to never leave any valuables in plain sight. Having things like cell phone chargers, GPS or your purse sitting outside in plain sight will attract unwanted attention. The best thing to do is put your valuables in the trunk, a locked glove box or under the seat.
