New Trail in Beachville

The Oxford River Trail and Observation Deck is ready for a summertime of fun in Beachville.

BEACHVILLE - Residents of Oxford County have a brand new trail to enjoy.

Local dignitaries were on hand this morning to cut the ribbon on the Oxford Thames River Trail and Observation Deck in Beachville. MPP for Oxford Ernie Hardeman tells Heart FM he did the trail this morning and he thinks it is going to be great for the public.

"The significance of this valley is still here, the nature of it, the trail doesn't seem to intrude onto the environment that they started with and I think that is what makes it so great."

The trail itself is perfect for cyclists and hikers and is big enough to fit a stroller on. Vice Chair for the Oxford County Trails Council Mike Hawkins says this is a great trail for birding.

"The birds down here are colossal, there are so many different ecological situations, environmental situations, we've got water, we've got deep forests, we've got grasslands so the wildlife down here is huge, so every day you come down here you see something different and every season is different, every season is beautiful down here."

Past Chair of the Oxford County Trails Council Dixie Westcar says the trail runs between the two rail lines coming back towards Woodstock.

"It runs right along the Thames River and it is absolutely a fabulous little jewel, it is with the loops it is nearly 4 km long, it runs past the new Wetland Restoration Area and then up onto the bluff where there is an observation area, looking out over the wetlands and the river."

Westcar says they received a Trillium Grant in 2014 for over $75,000 and have spent all of it on the trail.
