Oxford MP Arpan Khanna says we need to be at the bargaining table, and take steps within our own borders in the meantime.
OXFORD - Oxford County's Conservative Member of Parliament says we need a trade deal with the United States.
But in order to do that, Arpan Khanna says we have to be at the table.
"You have to show up and you have to be at the table! Yes there is going to be people you don't like at the table, but you still have to fight for families and give them a path towards hope. I think a lot of Canadians are losing hope right now."
Khanna says the US is our biggest trading partner and although he believes in diversifying trade, we can't just walk away from our neighbour that we share one of the world's largest borders with. He also says there's always noise at a bargaining table, but both sides have to put the noise aside, stop the rhetoric and fight for families, workers, and farmers.
He says we don't have control over what President Donald Trump says or does, but we can make a difference within our own borders.
"Canada is the only country in the G7 to put those fertilizer tariffs on our farmers, so there's things like that we could get removed and the Liberal government could take action on that today."
Khanna says Prime Minister Mark Carney promised to get rid of trade barriers with our own provinces, but he hasn't done so yet. He also says Prime Minister Carney promised to secure a trade deal with the United States during the last election, but he has not been sharing details with Parliament.
He says over $22 billion worth of trade comes in and out of Oxford County each year, and we've certainly been feeling the impacts of the trade war. He also says southwestern Ontario is one of the hardest hit areas when it comes to job lossess in manufactering.
