Oxford Tries to Stop Work at West Quarry Lake

The CAO of Oxford County has submitted a letter of concern with the Environment Compliance Approval about converting West Quarry Lake into a settling basin.

The CAO of Oxford County has submitted a letter of concern with the Environment Compliance Approval about converting West Quarry Lake into a settling basin.

In the letter Peter Crockett requests that any work be suspended until several concerns can be addressed. Manger of Water Services Deb Goudreau tells Heart FM what there biggest concern has been with this entire process.

"We are concerned about the process that the Ministry has followed and really the lack of ability for the a fulsome discussion and public comment and a review with some of the issues associated with the permit, so we are getting a legal opinion on the way the permit was handled."

The letter has been sent for the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and Carmeuse Lime Limited. It raises concerns with the June 15th ECA that would convert the Lake into a settling basin. Oxford views the lake as an important natural heritage feature and converting it into a storm water treatment/management facility is contrary to the community's best interest.

Goudreau says they are hopeful the letter will be considered.

"We're hopeful that they will take our opinion into account, we have commented on all aspects of this approval and the previous approvals that have gone before both ministries regarding the West Quarry Lake, so we hope that they will take that into consideration.
