Province Approves Source Protection Plan

New steps are being taken to protect the drinking water sources in Oxford County.

The Long Point Region Source Protection Plan has been approved by the Province and will be implemented next July.

It lays out the ground work to protect our municipal drinking water in the region. Manager of Water Services for Oxford County Deborah Goudreau tells Heart FM this plan impacts about 21 000 people in the County.

"So the Long Point Region includes the Southern Portion of Oxford County about 21 000 users in the Town of Tillsonburg, the Village of Norwich, and Otterville that are included in this plan and what the plan does is it outlines where the sources are for all of those municipal water services comes from. The policies that are in the plan will look at everything from education and outreach to just informing people where their drinking water comes and the types of activities that can result in threats to their drinking water and actually what land uses are occurring in their water right now."

Oxford County staff has been working with Conservation Authorities, the Lake Erie Region Source Protection Committee, and other municipalities to develop the SPP.
