WOODSTOCK - Oxford County Public Health is offering up prenatal classes specifically for teens this fall.
The classes are offered to address the need in the community and run from September to November.
Public Health Nurse Nora Shantz explains why they offer a class just for teens.
"Prenatal classes offer a comfortable learning environment where teens can learn from peers, topic information is delivered in a basic friendly language and format, it is a place where teens can talk, listen and learn from other young parents to be who are going through a similar experience."
Shantz says they don't have the exact teen pregnancy rate for Oxford but thinks it is in line with the Provincial average and that it is on the decline. She adds the free classes also set the teens up with a public health nurse who can offer them up to date information on how to care for a baby.
"So some of the topics that we cover in the classes are pre-term labour, stages of labour, infant safety, care of mom and newborn, infant feeding and prenatal nutrition."
