Oxford County has a new Queen of the Furrow.
Rechel Straus won the Farrow competition at the Oxford County Plowing Match in Oxford Centre over the weekend. She will take over for the current Queen Mary Fulton after the International Plowing Match in September and will serve for one full year. Straus tells Heart FM why she got involved in the competition.
" I have been riding horses and doing that type of thing since I was five and I have been involved in agriculture in that way, and a friend of mine has parents on the board in the association and they thought it might be a good fit for me to try, so I though why not have some fun and give it a shot."
In order to win she had to show her strengths in public speaking, and she had to actually plow a field. Part of her job as Queen will be to represent Oxford at local and international fairs and festivals, parades and finishing with the International Plowing Match which happens every September. She tells Heart FM she has been riding horses since she was a kid and doing chores, but this was her first experience on a tractor.
"I have never driven a tractor before, dad never let me, but Thursday night before the competition I got to drive a friends and practice once before the competition, it was definitely a different experience and a lot different from driving my car."
