Nobody was injured after 1,700 bales of straw went up in flames inside a Quonset hut in Norwich Township.
NORWICH TOWNSHIP - Nobody was injured after 1,700 bales of straw went up in flames inside a Quonset hut in Norwich Township.
The Burgessville Fire Department and Oxford OPP were called to the blaze on Beaconsville Road around 9:30 on Sunday night. Constable Lisa Naransik tells Heart FM it looks like a plastic shell caught fire inside the hut.
"Bales of straw that were in the structure caught fire, about 1,700 bails of the straw inside the hut, there was no livestock within the structure so it was only the straw that caught fire."
Police did have to close Beaconsfield Road from Highway 59 to Cedar Line to allow fire crews to bring in water to help fight the fire. Damage to the hut and the loss of the hay is expected to cost the farmer about $50,000.
