The games may be over, but the celebration continues at home for a Pan Am silver medalist
TILLSONBURG - Tillsonburg is celebrating the return of their own athlete from the Pan AM Games. Evan Van Moerkerke brought home the silver medal as his team finished 2nd in the 4x100m men's freestyle relay. Van Moerkerke expresses his appreciation for the support he has had every step of the way. "The hometown support I have right now is incredible; everyone I meet knows who I am, they are congratulating me. It is an amazing feeling just how proud everyone is of me, and how proud I am to be able to say that I am from Tillsonburg."
Van Moerkerke explains his journey: "I have been swimming my whole life but it wasn't really until I got to university that I really started setting my goals a little higher, and really started believing that I could make it that far. The first weekend in April this year I attended World Trials and Pan AM Trials in Scarborough and that is where I had qualified for the team."
Wasting no time, Van Moerkerke already has his sights set on the next big thing. "Olympic Trials are in the first week of April coming up, I think my next goal will be trying to make that team. It doesn't matter where you are from just believe that you can do it and you can succeed. It is all about wanting it bad enough and just believing in yourself."
Tillsonburg has also joined in on the celebration by having a meet and greet with Van Moerkerke. He would like to thank everyone who has congratulated him and followed his progress since an early age around the pool.
