General Manager Brad Treliving was fired midway through his third season.

TORONTO - The Toronto Maple Leafs are making major changes in the front office.

General Manager Brad Treliving was fired in his third season, with his team undergoing many changes. The announcement came out Monday evening, less than two hours before the Leafs faced off against the Anaheim Ducks.

"It was determined that the club must chart a new course under different leadership." Says Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment President & CEO Keith Pelley on why Treliving got fired.

In his first season as GM, Toronto was third in the Atlantic Division and was eliminated by the Boston Bruins in seven games. This comes in the wake of a potential rebuild as the team has a 32-30-13 record, which is 22nd out of 32 teams.

Treliving has been busy in free agency with him acquiring Chris Tanev, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Nicolas Roy, Matias Maccelli and Dakota Joshua, but unfortunately lost all-star Mitch Marner last offseason to Vegas. In Treliving's three seasons, he has a record of 129-82-27

Although the timing of the move might be a bit surprising, there were several trades that likely led to Treliving's dismissal.

The biggest one came last March, when prospect Fraser Minten and a 2026 top-five protected pick went to the Bruins for defenseman Brandon Carlo. Minten is currently playing on the Bruins' top line, with the pick looking to be between No. 5 to 10 overall.

Another head-scratching trade was for Scott Laughton, who was acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers last season for a conditional first-round pick and prospect Nikita Grebenkin. On March 6, Laughton was traded to the Los Angeles Kings for a conditional third-round pick that elevates to a second-round pick if the Kings make the postseason. So they essentially traded a prospect and a first-round pick for a potential second-round pick.

Before being hired by Toronto, Treliving spent nine seasons as GM of the Calgary Flames and seven seasons as the vice president of hockey operations and assistant GM of the Arizona Coyotes.
