The Vets suffered a 4-1 loss to the Firebirds on Monday, and Game 2 will takeover Southwood Arena this Friday.
WOODSTOCK - It is unfamiliar territory for the Woodstock Navy Vets.
For the first time in the 2024 PJHL playoffs, they have not won the first game of a series.
In Game 1 of the Doherty Division Final, the Vets fell to New Hamburg on Monday by the score of 4-1. Head Coach, Darren Young said there were some positives, but one area was what put them behind the eight ball.
"When we were able to get the pucks behind the defence and go forecheck and play in the o-zone, we did sustain some pressure and generate some chances. So, we were successful when we did that, when we turned pucks over it cost us."
He says the neutral zone turnovers need to be cleaned up, as the Firebirds are a quick team on the transition. Young says they will try and create a game plan during practice and while watching game film, that will allow for more offensive zone time.
Before starting the final, Young has seen the entire team firing on all cylinders.
"We have three rookies on a line together and they have been really good. I think last series they scored four goals for us out of our 15, so that was big. We have been getting contributions up and down the lineup."
Young says off the ice, the fans are a huge boost for the team, and he hopes they come and pack Southwood Arena for Game 2. It will be played on Friday, March 29th with puck drop set for 1:45 p.m.
