Renowned dementia educator Teepa Snow coming to Woodstock
WOODSTOCK -- World-renowned dementia educator, Teepa Snow will be paying a visit to Woodstock on Wednesday.
Beth Haas of the Alzheimer Society Oxford says Snow is an Occupational Therapist known for her work in geriatric medicine and dementia care, driven to help families and professionals better understand what it is like to live with dementia, the challenges this presents and improvements to the care that is offered.
Haas refers to Snow as a "superstar" in dementia care and says they are delighted to have her visit Oxford County for two separate presentations.
"She's not someone who stands behind a podium for three hours and talks but wanders through the audience, pulling people up to do role modelling right then and there to make a point about how to communicate with someone with dementia or how to approach someone or how to apologize or how to give them control or a sense of control."
Snow will share her expertise through two separate presentations; one for health care professionals and another for family caregivers. "Caregivers at home tend to be stressed far more quickly than a health professional who can leave after their seven hour shift and who might be dealing with a team of colleagues who can brainstorm together. We're trying to focus the morning on family members and friends and offer them solutions that they can use in a more focused way on an hour-to-hour basis."
The two sessions for Wednesday are unfortunately full but Haas says Snow will be in Grey-Bruce Monday and London on Tuesday.
"I know that if people are interested and hear reports after the day of how well it went and how engaging she is that there will be future chances to come and hear her next year. They can also check out our web site at www.alzheimer.ca/oxford for further updates as to when she might returning to Southwestern Ontario."
