The Oxford Attack Under 16 Midget Boys stand their ground at home tournament.
WOODSTOCK - The Oxford Attack Under-16 Major Midget Boys team won bronze at their home sanctioned Ontario Basketball Association tournament in Woodstock.
8 teams from all over the province converged on Woodstock for the Oxford Attack Basketball Club’s inaugural U-16 boys A/AA tournament. The tournament offered all teams 4-games each spread over Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The Attack boys opened pool play with a lopsided win over the Ancaster Magic’s #2 team 84-30. The Attack were firing on all cylinders the entire game against an overmatched Magic squad.
The Attack next faced the Prince Edward County Clippers from the Belleville region and battled against the Clippers dominant 6’6” big man en route to a hard fought 47-35 victory.
The Attack completed pool play against a tough Welland Warriors #1 squad. The winner of this game moved onto to the gold medal game; the loser to the bronze medal game. The Warriors jumped out an enormous 27-10 lead on the Attack using their full court 2-2-1 press to slow the Attack advance before the Warriors settled into their stubborn 2-3 half court zone defense. The Attack repeatedly found themselves struggling for consistent offense battling both the Warrior defense and an expiring shot clock. The second half was a completely different game for both teams. The Attack solved the Warriors defensive sets and hit multiple 3-point shots to make a furious comeback to fall short by a single point, losing 47-46 in an exciting game for both teams and their fans.
The Attack then met the Ancaster Magics #1 team for bronze. The Attack boys were in control of the game from the outset and completed a successful inaugural home tourney by winning a bronze medal 59-48.
The Welland Warriors #1 team easily defeated the Mississauga Jayhawks 92-54 in the gold medal game.
Next up for the Oxford Attack U-16 boys is a home friendly tournament on Sunday April 24, being held at St. Mary’s High School in Woodstock. The Attack play at 9:00 am, 10:30 am and 4:30 pm.
