The Town of Tillsonburg has asked Oxford County to consider the suspension of garbage bag tags during the COVID-19 pandemic.
OXFORD COUNTY - The Town of Tillsonburg has asked Oxford County to consider the suspension of garbage bag tags during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The matter was brought up in the correspondence section of the Oxford County council meeting on Wednesday. It was asked to be considered with the COVID-19 Financial Relief Measures report.
County Council did not vote on garbage bag tags at the April 8th meeting. Staff have been directed to write a report and come back to council at a later date.
Warden Larry Martin explains why they haven't suspended bag tags at this time.
"One has to remember though as well, we contract that service out and those services will have to be paid for in one manner or another and you have to realize, the bag tags generate over $270,000 a month for the County, so it is not something you just look at lightly."
Martin says the request wasn't a formal part of the agenda.
"It wasn't submitted with the agenda, I know it is being looked into and we will bring a report back."
The Director of Corporate Services for Oxford County is meeting with area treasurers to get a complete report of the financial implications COVID-19 is having on local municipalities in Oxford County.
