The child had been in contact with a rabies positive bat in northern Ontario.
BRANT - A child in the Brant County area has died of rabies.
The Brant County Health Unit reported a human case of rabies on September 6th, saying the individual had been in contact with a bat in the Gowganda area of the Timiskaming region in northern Ontario. That bat was confirmed to be rabies positive on September 25th.
Dr. Malcom Lock, the Medical Officer of Health for the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit, confirmed the child's death during a board of health meeting earlier this week. He said the child woke up to find a bat in their room and the parents did not see any signs of a bite, scratches or saliva, so they didn't take the child to get a rabies vaccination.
A Brant County Health Unit spokesperson said there was only one human case of rabies in the county but did not share any further information.
Merger discussions have taken place between the two health units.
Human cases of rabies are rare in Canada, with less than 30 of them reported since 1924.
