The CAW brought the call for a national auto policy to Ingersoll Tuesday night. A panel of local leaders, and CAW President Ken Lewenza talked about the importance of auto jobs to the local economy, and the need to protect that industry. Lewenza says a national policy is needed in a global marketplace to protect Canadian jobs. "We're competing with Japan, we're competing with Germany, Korea, comparable wages. I mean these developed countries aren't looking at the wages, they're looking at the strengths of the auto industry and what they're bringing to the community. If they were looking at wages every job would be in Mexico." Former Woodstock Mayor Michael Harding spoke about the importance the Toyota Plant brings to local governments. "The Toyota Plant alone is contributing $4.25-million every year to the city, $2-million to the County, $4-million for education and if you add four other other pre-Toyota plants, that's another $1.2-million...there's 10-million bucks that's being contributed." There is a 10 step plan including a 50 page report which can be viewed here.
