Additional funds for road resurfacing, contributions to Woodstock's capital and parks reserve funds and money for a pair of new studies are some of the highlights.
Woodstock city councillors approved increasing spending by 2.17 per cent in the 2014 operating budget on Thursday night.
For the average home assessed at $221,000, the city portion of residents property tax bills will increase by just under $43. However, property owners will actually pay much less than that.
"When you take a look at the total tax bill changes, including the city, the County of Oxford and education, the total increase on the total tax bill will only be $9.58, or .29 per cent," said David Creery, Woodstock's Chief Administrative Officer.
Creery said staff faced numerous challenges when tackling this years budget, including the the on-going challenge of finding money to maintain the city's capital infrastructure without "sending significant increases to the taxpayer."
Budget Highlights
- The city is spending $1.6 million on road resurfacing, which Creery said is about $600,000 more than it historical values.
- Added contribution to the capital and parks reserve funds.
- Funds to hire additional temporary seasonal staff in the public works and parks departments.
- Two new studies funded, including a transit route and service hours study and a recreational facility needs study.
