City Light Displays

City planning three holiday light displays this year

WOODSTOCK - The holiday season is spreading in Oxford County. The City of Woodstock is ringing in the holidays with some changes to three city operated light displays. Communications Manager of Special Events for the City, Brad Janssen said an effort is being made to beautify Southside Park, "the big tree that beautifies Museum Square over the last number of years will be moved down to Southside park, where the dry bridge is just north of the boathouse."

Moving the 30 foot tree is only one change and Janssen said they plan on adding even more, "...each and every year we will be putting more displays there (Southside Park) and we hope that it will become a true destination point..." The decision to move the tree and make Southside park the central attraction during the winter season has been discussed for quite a while. "We decided that it was time for a bit of a change, its often been discussed to start beautifying Southside Park the crown jewel of our park system. The city is basing the park off a similar model in Simcoe.

Janssen said previous lighting displays have caused some trouble to living trees. "We found that the trees at the front of the square their growth is being stunted a little bit because of the lighting and cable ties that are holding the lights on the branches and we are going to take those out and beautify and light up the two big fir trees on either side of the entrance to the Historic Museum."

Other changes include moving the Santa House closer to Dundas street. The hope is that the displays will grow especially in Southside Park.

Lights will be on a scheduled timer and will end at 11 p.m most days. The traditional lighting of the displays in Museum Square will continue this year on November 14th.
