County snow plows having trouble keeping with with blowing and drifting snow

Rural snow plough crews are having trouble keeping up with the drifting snow today.

While crews have been working to keep the roads clear, in some areas, the snow is drifting back in within 30-mintues.

Public Works Director in Blandford-Blenheim Gary Crandall says these drifts can be quite dangerous.  "Some road, north and south running, within a couple hours the drifts are getting very heavy in localized spots.  With the cold air, the snow is also drifting in very hard."

Oxford has not had to shut down any roads, as they have in Perth and Huron Counties for a second straight night.

Crandall is also asking the public not to shovel or blow snow back onto the roadway.  "They're either pushing it or blowing it out.  Once you move snow it becomes condensed and it gets very hard.  It's hard on our equipment and also creates a hazard for the vehicles travelling the roads."

It is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act and carries a $105 fine.

The Highway Traffic Act states "No person shall deposit snow or ice on a roadway without permission in writing so to do from the Ministry or the road authority responsible for the maintenance of the road".

Crandall says for now, they're just issuing a public notice not to push snow on the road, but if it continues, he says they'll ask the OPP to issue the fines.
