Oxford OPP are warning residents of the consequences for stealing or damaging candidates signs.
OXFORD COUNTY -- One candidate in South-West Oxford is claiming all of their signs have been stolen for the upcoming municipal election.
Although Oxford OPP have not confirmed any reports of sign thefts or vandalism, Constable Lisa Narancsik says those caught in the act of stealing or defacing the signs could face criminal charges.
"It could be that their defacing the signs. If they are removing them and breaking them that would definitely constitute mischief. Now if people are defacing them and writing specific comments on it that could also lead into other criminal charges. If they're not owned by the person going near them they should be staying away and not damaging private property."
Narancsik encourages anyone who witnesses suspicious activity to call police immediately.
"As with everything, we're always asking the public to be vigiliant when they observe things happening at the time and notify police when they see things happening. If they see something suspicous in their area, whether it's a vehicle or people going onto property they know they don't belong to let us know right away so police can respond in a timely matter."
