Heat Wave Continues in Oxford County

The heat warning remains in effect in Oxford County and the cooling centres in Woodstock, Tillsonburg and Ingersoll will be open today.

OXFORD COUNTY - A heat warning remains in place today with temperatures expected to feel like 40 degrees with the humidity.

The three main cooling centres in Oxford County are open to the public today during day 2 of the mini heat wave. Southwestern Public Health says you should call ahead first if you plan on going to the Fusion Youth Centre in Ingersoll, the Tillsonburg Mall or the Reeves Community Complex in Woodstock.

Public Health Nurse Kayla Elms says you should also take plenty of breaks, find shade, drink lot's of water and avoid caffeine and alcohol today.

"Stay hydrated and where possible, avoid caffeinated and alcoholic drinks. Seek as much shade as you can, whether that is staying indoors to stay cool, or if you are outdoors, find a nice shady spot to limit your exposure to the sun."

Elms says some people are more susceptible to the heat.

"People who should be the most cautious are people who work outside and can't get inside for large chunks of the day, anyone with a chronic illness, small children and seniors are generally highest risk to heat related illness."

Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high risk category. Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.

Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle. When it's hot eat cool, light meals.
