Akshay Vardhan would like to address local issues and stand up for farmers if he becomes the next MP for Oxford County.
OXFORD COUNTY - He has over a decade of experience in law, finance and technology and now he's looking to enter federal politics.
Akshay Vardhan is a lawyer from Embro and he's running as an Independent candidate for Oxford County in the upcoming federal election.
He says this gives him an advantage over the other candidates.
"I can actually talk for the people of Oxford instead of representing a political party and being hard lined by them. I am not tied to any ideaology of any political party, so I can actually listen to the people of Oxford and what they want so I can project that in Parliament."
Vardhan has law firms in Cambridge and Toronto, but he is very passionate about his hometown community. He volunteers for popular events like the Embro Highland Games and the Embro Truck and Tractor Pull over the summer months.
He would like address local issues affecting our area if he's elected as our next Member of Parliament.
"Everyone is talking about US President Trump and the tariffs but who is talking about the local issues? There is no political party that is talking about the local issues going on in the community right now, so I think that needs to be prioritized."
He says protecting local farmers is first on his to do list.
"We are losing the farmland at a significant pace, so that is a key pressing issue right now. My focus will be how we can help the farmers and how we can recover it. Specifically with the dairy farmers, they are getting pressure from the supply management that they have. They are getting pressure from opening up the market from the US side, so we need to control that in order for our farmers to succeed."
The federal election is scheduled for April 28th.
