The Woodstock Wrestling Club can now boast about having two National Champions.
WOODSTOCK - Two people from Woodstock won Gold medals at the National Canadian Championships in Fredericton New Brunswick.
Ryan Fowler won the gold in the U17 in the 66 kilograms weight division. Teagan Vanzantvoort also won gold in the U17 61 kilogram weight division.
Head Coach of the Woodstock Wrestling Club Gary McQuaid says it was incredibly emotional when the kids won gold.
"If I thought Ryan was ecstatic when he won, Teagan was basically kneeling on the mat, bawling her eyes out, it was such an emotional moment for our team, because we are such a small team and everyone was so happy for both of them."
McQuaid says this is the highest honour in Canadian wrestling for their age level.
"So they were competing in the U17, U19 Canadian Wrestling Championships, which is the National Wrestling Championships, so every Province was competing at this event and they also had a wrestler from Nunavut."
Fowler and Vanzantvoort are the first National Wrestling Champions ever to come from Woodstock. Vanantvoort is now going to test her luck on the International stage representing Canada. McQuaid says both wrestlers had an amazing weekend in Fredericton. Teagan only had two points scored against her for the entire weekend. Fowler meanwhile won the gold medal after beating a kid, that he had previously lost too, four times."
The Woodstock Wrestling Club only sent four wrestlers to the National Championships, so coming home with two gold medals is remarkable. Also competing in Fredericton was Logan Collins, who was one of the youngest competitors in the U17 division.
Teagan's sister, Dinfy Vanzantvoort competed in the U19 division. Unfortunately for her, she suffered a shoulder injury in her first match up.
