A rapid response team has been created to help Maple Leaf workers in Thamesford find new jobs.
THAMESFORD - Employees at the Maple Leaf Foods Processing Plant in Thamesford were shocked to learn the plant will be closing down in 2018.
They were informed of the news yesterday at a special meeting. Roughly 400 employees will be without a job when the plant moves into the a new Sofina facility in Mitchell. Economic Development Officer with Rural Oxford Economic Development Commission Bernia Wheaton says they will work with the employees to find new jobs.
"Our first priority is to help the employees transition into other jobs that we know are out there in the area and work is already being done on that and people are already being put together in what we call a rapid response team."
Wheaton says they are also working to find a new tenant for the building that will hopefully bring back some jobs to Thamesford.
