Message From SWOX Mayor David Mayberry

The Mayor of South West Oxford David Mayberry has issued another message for residents.

SOUTH WEST OXFORD - The Mayor of South West Oxford David Mayberry has issued another message for residents.

He is urging everyone to stay the course and continue to practice social distancing. You can read the full statement from David Mayberry below:

It has now been a month since the province declared an emergency related to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Since then all of us have been subject to restrictions in our daily activities that are truly unique in our lifetimes. The closure of non-essential businesses and activities has been a major disruptor in our lives, our communities and our economy; but they have been, and continue to be, absolutely necessary to reduce the spread of this virus.

I fully realize that there is a great deal of concern and angst as a result of the impacts imposed by the provincial decision to attempt to stop the spread of this pandemic by curtailing many of our everyday activities. While I appreciate the desire for all of us to “get back to normal” I must ask that we remain as vigilant in the next few weeks as we have been in the past month. The numbers speak for themselves. In Oxford County, there are (as of this morning) only ten cases confirmed as positive for COVID and none in South-West Oxford. Some of this is due to good luck, but the vast majority of our success in curtailing the spread is the result of all of us being careful and practicing those simple rules of washing your hands, physical distancing, coughing and sneezing into your elbow, staying home and monitoring our own health and those in our care. Despite our desire, this is not yet the time to relax and by doing so, lose the great results we have so far achieved.

As much as each of us wants to get out there and reconnect with our friends and reestablish our businesses, this is not the time. We must continue to respect the provincial directions and take seriously our role in combating the spread of this pandemic. I do not want to see the kind of tragedy that has occurred in other jurisdictions around the world. I understand that no one is enjoying the imposed restrictions, but they are both necessary and responsible. I urge all of us to continue to respect the restrictions, and the health of our community, by demonstrating responsible citizenship. This time of adversity will eventually end and we will get through this pandemic as a strong and strengthened community.

Finally, everyone handles stressful situations differently, and we are definitely in the middle of a stressful situation. I encourage you to reach out through a phone call or email to those who may be struggling with this situation. We can all help and reassure each other that we will get through this crisis. If you or someone you know needs professional help or counselling, I urge you to contact Oxford Mental Health at 519-539-8055.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation, it is both appreciated and essential.
